Yes it is a type of brain tumor. There are many different varieties of brain tumors, including astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, etc. They are named according to the type of brain tissue they come from: oligodendrocytes, astrocytes, etc. Depending on the way the tissue looks under the microscope, pathologists can grade these brain tumors from grade 1 (low grade) through grade 4 (high grade). Grade 4 is also commonly known as glioblastoma multiforme (GBM).
